At Um al Nasser wastewater treatment facility in Beit Hanoun, sewage is being treated to restore Gaza's depleted groundwater in the hopes that one day there will be more water that is drinkable and accessible. NRC worked with the Coastal Municipal Water Utility (CMWU) to carry out an emergency WASH intervention to prevent flooding and overflow of sewage. Gaza's chronic energy crisis and current fuel shortage has exacerbated the risk of flooding and overflow of sewage as pumping stations at Um al Nasser cannot run regularly.
