Barriers to legal residency
Bassam, and his sons have not been able to renew their residency permits due to the complex renewal procedures at the general security offices. “When I get stopped at check points it is a big hassle because I lack the valid permits but sometimes the officers in charge respect my old age and let me pass without no problem,” Bassam says. “The fact that we cannot renew our residency permits makes it even harder for my boys to work and earn money as they fear to move around freely. I never feel that I am in peace. We are never relaxed and we are like strangers although we have lived here for five years now. It is difficult to be a refugee in Lebanon, we do not have enough money, work, safe homes, adequate and clean water, healthcare, or any basic necessities to live a decent life. I hope that we can go back to our country as soon as possible," he continues.
