Khazer displacement site, 30 kilometres from Mosul
Children dance, play and get their faces painted in Khazer camp. NRC staff have created a safe space for the children to play and have fun, to help them get over the trauma they have experienced under ISIS’s brutal rule. Four hundred children are taken care of in Khazer camp.
Khazer camp was set up to receive newly displaced civilians who had fled the besieged city of Mosul, since an offensive by the Iraqi armed forces began on 17 October to recapture it from the armed group ISIS.
As of 10 November, over 42,000 people had fled Mosul and its outskirts, about half fleeing to displacement camps like Khazer.
Aid agencies like the Norwegian Refugee Council are on the ground, providing assistance to families as they flee for safety.
