Warao community outside Puerto Ordaz
“There was nobody here before we came, we arrived like Simon Bolivar,” recalls Carlota Diaz, 63. Her husband (also pictured) is sick with fever and malaria. Her two children live right next door in the landfill site. “Everything here comes from the landfill. We live on it and from it. We need help to find other sources of income, like fishing. I don’t want to continue working with only garbage,” she tells us.
The ground is black from all the burned garbage. Traces of melted electrical equipment, plastic and fabric are all around. Carlota fears for their security and says that her house was robbed.
