A record one million displaced by violence in Burkina Faso amid Covid-19
Armed violence against civilians has now displaced an unprecedented 1 million inside Burkina Faso. This is happening in a context where the coronavirus pandemic is worsening an already critical situation.
Over 450,000 people were displaced since January alone, with 185 attacks against civilians recorded. Schools and healthcare facilities are regularly targeted by armed groups.
Hunger levels are dangerously rising because of the violence, low rainfall and Covid-19 restrictions.
The effects of Covid-19 go far beyond its health impacts. Internally displaced families are being hard hit by economic shocks, as well as by lockdown measures to contain the virus, such as the closure of schools, businesses and government institutions.

Schools and healthcare facilities are regularly targeted by armed groups. Sixteen schools were burnt to the ground in the east of the country since 27 July alone, jeopardizing the next school year for thousands of children.
