Refugee families move to new homes in Kutupalong refugee camp
Families wait in the UN bus that will take them from the transit center and to their new homes inside the mega camp of Kutupalong. 65 families will be moved today.
The families did not manage to bring many belongings with them when they fled Myanmar, so they travel light. Due to the rapid and unorganised growth of the refugee camp in the months following the massive influx of refugees, the camp lacks proper infrastructure and have very few proper roads.
This means that the refugees will have to walk for 45 minutes through hills and riverbeds on small pathways to arrive to their new home. The Bangladeshi authorities have allocated land for a new extension of the camp to be constructed. In cooperation with the UN they have removed tons of sand from the hilltops to make a flat area, safer from landslides.
A temporary shelter made of bamboo and plastic sheeting waits for each family.
